In developing organizational goals and objectives, I usually benchmark against competitors and we do our research. Then I brainstorm with the other unit heads to determine where we want to be. Once everything is aligned, we figure out how everyone can contribute to achieve our short term and long term goals. This approach has been working for me because the unit heads take ownership of their goals and they feel motivated to contribute because they know that they are valued members of the organization.
